Very Badly Burned

Do you know what sheet beating is? It is when you take someone out back, cover them with a bed sheet, and start wailing on them. That is what a sunburn feels like.

Does this mean you are actually very badly sunburned Genny?

If so, no photos?

If so, I suggest putting aloe juice directly from a piece of aloe plant (slice a leaf of it in half, trim off thorns, apply directly to skin) on all burned areas.

Does this mean you are near the Equator?

In my mind's eye I see you relaxing on a tropical Pacific island.

actually, this topic was covered on npr today. the dermatologist they interviewed said the best thing to do for a sunburn is cool it with a wet washcloth. ointments sit on the skin and end up irritating it more.

Jason, I am sunburned. I don't know if "very badly" is a good term since I'm not actually suffering from sun poisoning, just incredible, yet decreasing, discomfort. As for photos, I'm afraid I still have trouble taking pictures of myself and the burn has gone down considerably from when I first got it. let's just say that I have some bright pink and red clothing that totally match my tummy.

TallE, yes, I am near the equator. I am in Hawaii. It is very tropical and very pacific. This should not be confused wth Japan which is also pacific, but not very tropical.

Virb, I agree with the dermatologist. If you have a sun burn, it is like other burns in that it is best to let the heat escape, not trap it in with lotions and such (yes, even aloe). Now, once your skin has cooled in a few days, of course nothing helps the peel like some aloe or (my favorite) cocoa butter, but you really need to wait until your skin is on the mend before applying anything. The best cure: cold showers.

UPDATE:

We're on the mend. I've finally graduated from feeling bruised to feeling incredibly itchy. After my first course of lotions though, I'm feeling much better. Also, my skin has turned from pinkish-red to purpleish-brown. Hoorah!
